Brainspotting (BSP)
Brainspotting (BSP) therapy was developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003 while he was using EMDR with his clients. It is based on the idea that certain eye positions, called “brainspots,” indicate areas of heightened brain activity related to unresolved trauma or emotional distress. Clients can assess and process their deep-seated emotions, memories, and sensations associated with their trauma when they are focused on their brainspots.
Brainspotting therapy can help clients identify and process underlying triggers and emotions, experience deeper insight and understanding of their problems, reduce the intensity and frequency of emotions and sensations, and resolve deep-seated trauma and other challenging problems. It can also complement other treatment modalities.
Science Behind Brainspotting
Brainspotting leverages the brain-body connection by using eye positions to access areas in the brain where emotional and traumatic memories are stored. The technique directly taps into the subcortical brain, which controls emotions and survival responses, bypassing the more analytical thinking parts of the brain.
Studies suggest that traumatic memories are often lodged in the subcortical regions, such as the amygdala and hippocampus, where they remain unresolved. By guiding clients to focus on specific brainspots while simultaneously attuning to their emotional and physical responses, Brainspotting helps unlock these deeply stored experiences for processing and integration.
The brain’s neuroplasticity plays a crucial role in this therapy. As clients access and process these memories, neural pathways can be rewired, reducing the distress associated with past trauma and promoting healing. The bilateral auditory stimulation often used in Brainspotting sessions may also enhance this process by fostering deeper states of brain integration.
